At Chanute I was housed in the old hospital.I only did one tour in the Air Force. I am not sure why I ended up in AGE. I wanted into electronics. I had two years of it in high school and lived with all my life, but I guess I showed some mechanical aptitude. I mostly worked the night shifts. I ended up with a number of misfits to lead. Kept most of them out of trouble.
I spent my entire career with the F-111 program although I nearly made an escape 3 times. During a period from May 72 to December 72 I had orders and was on my way to NKP Thailand, Da Nang on one occasion and Ton Son Nhut Vietnam another. The Ton Son Nhut assignment would have put me in Vietnam in time to turn out the lights as the last of the American main forces exited.All three orders were cancelled within just days of reporting to Travis for transport across the pond. Nixon and Kissinger just couldn't make up their minds what to do with Vietnam. Instead I ended up mopping up with the air war in Vietnam and the continued air war in Cambodia. Since I had 3 aborted deployments, a TDY deployment, and another round trip stateside and back for a full tour in SEA, I decided I had enough and seperated.
I used all my AGE training to get into steel fabrication as a detailer, project manager, and estimator. Assignments: Chanute AFB 70-71 Nellis AFB 71-73 426th TFS and 474th FMS after reorganization. Tahkli RTAFB 73 TDY 474th FMS Tahkli RTAFB August 73-July 74 TDY out of AGE for a month in operations on the other end of the dispatch radio. 2 yes 2 TDYs for mail escort to Bangkok Thailand. Yes two trips to Bangkok room and board on Uncle. Rode truck with Thai driver from Tahkli to Bangkok and back for two different one week periods, with no weapon to stop the driver if he wanted to make off with all the mail. Korat RTAFB July 74-August 74. 347th FMS. Yes my friends. We went to all that trouble to deploy half a wing to Tahkli from Nellis only to close it down and deploy a full wing to Korat. I at least wasn't in that first group that deployed to Tahkli and half to cut down elephant grass tall as man.
